Book Spotlight: Curses Come Home

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book for review. All opinions are mine.

I love short stories. There is an art form to writing such an intriguing story within a limited amount of words.

Curses Come Home – Stories from the Dark Side of 21st Century Society
by Morven Watt, is a fantastic new book, which is the first in a series of short story collections. There’s a great variety of stories which present vivid, interesting characters. There’s a frightening virtual reality prank, a story of child custody, and so much more. This is a clever collection of stories which have an underlying theme that examines how we live our lives in the modern world. This is a journey through the dark side of the 21st century world. The stories are interestingly unsettling and yet ring so true that you can’t put this book down. They make you think and it is an enjoyable read throughout.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories. A few of my personal favorites were: “Virtual”, “Forgotten”, and “Theory 2.0”. “Virtual” tells the story of a teenage girl being in the middle of a terrible virtual reality prank. “Forgotten” tells the story of a father who is desperate to get his young daughter away from his estranged wife. He has quite a decision to make and I kept asking myself what I would do if I were him. And then there’s “Theory 2.0” which explores what it would be like if we had a social media app that showed us the road that we didn’t take in life. It’s tempting sometimes to think of ‘what if’. This is a great idea to analyze in short story form.

The author has a fantastic imagination and her skill takes you into a world that is brimming with intriguing situations. Her descriptions are vivid and this makes the stories even more interesting to experience. I love it when a book can be entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a great read!
