My Writerly Ways

In my last post, I revealed a few things about myself and it was fun :-) So today I thought that I would reveal some more about what I get up to when I’m not here at my blog. Well, I’m usually writing something or the other, whether for school, my fiction aspirations, or for the website /e-zine that I contribute to currently.

I’m nearing the end of my projects for school, so I’m glad about that :-) Ecstatic is more like it….LOL. It has been very interesting and enjoyable though. I’ve been learning a lot, but I know that as always, there is more to learn. Life is about learning as you go, so I really enjoy that journey.

My fiction aspirations and writing have taken many forms. I have dabbled in poetry in the past, but I REALLY know that’s not my strength. LOL. I have written my share of short stories over the years and a few years ago, I had a couple of them to receive honorable mentions in the Writers Digest Competition. Those were my high points with that genre though :-) Lately I’ve been thinking that I should get back into writing short stories again to get my creative juices flowing. I think I’ll do that. It might be fun! ;-)

As for my current writing, I’ve been contributing to Tango Echo, which is an arts and culture e-zine. I’m really enjoying writing for them. Here are the links to my articles and a bit about what I’ve written for them so far.

The first one was about my love of architecture and I wrote about the various churches that I’ve visited around England. I really enjoyed this assignment because it also involved my love of photography. I’m always given the opportunity to include my own photos and coincidentally, the photo at the very beginning of the article is the one that I had included in the Schmap travel guide. This by the way is how Schmap found my photo. It’s a small world :-) Anyway, here’s the link to my article, “Cathedrals of England”.

The next article is about my love of antiquing at flea markets. I’ve written here at my blog before about my love of going to Devizes. Well this article is about one of my trips down there. Here’s the link to “Antiquing: A History Lesson” .

I hope you enjoy taking a peek at what I get up to when I’m not blogging here or busying myself around the Yellow House or dancing around with Brit Boy ;-)
Have a great day and I’ll talk to you later!

A Simply Good Weekend

Over the weekend, Brit Boy and I went down to the market town of Devizes and did some errands. We like it down there. It’s a nice little town with cozy little walkways between the shops. As we did our errands we picked up some food at the supermarket for our lunch. Then we walked back to our car. We sat in the car underneath a beautiful canopy of trees and listened to the radio as we ate our lunch. We shared a pasta salad and had sandwiches…we hadn’t had breakfast so we were hungry ;-) It was really good! I think that the combination of good food, good music and the scenery were just the right way to spend our day. I love days like that. It just reminds me that the simple things in life are indeed the beauty of life. Here are a couple of photos I took from the car after we finished eating. The trees were beautiful. Here’s a bit of our view.

On Sunday, I was in a baking mood and autumn always makes me muffin crazy, so this was my snack on Sunday afternoon and it was so good :-)

I made apple cinnamon muffins. The house smelled great as they were baking. I just love those apple cinnamon aromas during this time of the year. Don’t you? :-) It just smells like autumn.

Brit Boy has been having a couple for breakfast every morning and I’ve been having them too, so we’re starting to run low. So now I’m off to replenish the supply. Talk to you later!

Devizes Doily

I wrote at the end of April about us spending our wedding anniversary together at Westonbirt and also visiting the market at Devizes. That was a great week. (smile) I shared at the time that we bought a colorful dish when we were at Westonbirt to commemorate our anniversary. I love that little dish.

Well, I wanted to share a few other finds that we made that week. We try to purchase little, inexpensive, interesting things that we can have around our home to help us remember this time in our lives. (smile)

I really loved it when we went to the market in Devizes. They have a weekly market and then they have a collectibles/antiques market there also. So when we went down there, we picked up some neat little things. I love looking at things from the past, so I was in hog heaven as we browsed around the collectibles/antiques market. (smile)

One of my favorite finds was a napkinish-doily. It is so lovely to me. They had a pile of things like this. When I saw it, it instantly made me think of back home. We had pieces similar to this around home when I was growing up. They had been my grandmother’s things and had been passed along through the family. I love the continuity of my grandparents’ and parents’ possessions in my hands. These things feed my sense of self and I feel connected to them. And even though this doily that I found in Devizes, here in England, never belonged to anyone that I’m related to, I felt a connection anyway…a connection to another human being who owned this before me and used this in their daily life. I wonder about this doily’s story. I guess that the story continues with us now. (smile)

Here are a couple of photos of the doily, but they don’t do it justice. It was hard to photograph. But I hope it comes through okay.

We picked up a couple of other things, so I’ll be sharing those another day. We are planning on visiting some more, so if we find anything else interesting, I’ll surely be sharing it with you all :-)
