Saturday - Easter Weekend

Happy Saturday!

Just checking in to share a couple of photos depicting a bit of Saturday around the Yellow House.

Hubby and I took a walk this morning and this lovely little yellow flower caught my eye...well of course it would...it goes along with the yellow theme around the Yellow House 😉

It's actually a dandelion flower I think, which is more of a weed to some, but it's still a lovely color yellow and a flower nonetheless.

Lunch today was lovely and refreshing, especially on this Easter weekend. I made some delicious sandwiches for hubby and me. This was an off the cuff creation just using what was in the refrigerator. It turned out delicious!!!

 Sandwich

The ingredients for my Saturday sandwich:

  • cucumber
  • onion
  • watercress/rocket (arugula) mixed greens
  • olives
  • cheese
  • chili flavored hummus
  • mayo
  • brown bread

In a world with a lot of heaviness, we must make room for some of the simple joys of life also. So, here's to beautiful yellow flowers and delicious sandwiches!

Happy Saturday! Happy Easter Weekend! 💮

Easter Weekend

Today is my first day back in the regular day saddle. We had an extra day off yesterday since Easter Monday is observed here. We had a really good Easter weekend. It all started on last Thursday. My other half took off half of the day to take me to an appointment and then we decided to go into town to pick up a few things for Easter dinner, etc. Well, Easter weekend traffic started early. It's always kinda annoying to get stuck in traffic, but having a nice view made it not so bad. I took this photo out the car window. Don't worry, I wasn't driving ;-) Interestingly, there was hardly any traffic in the other direction so that's why the road on that side looks deserted...because it almost was. Lol.

On Good Friday, we went to visit a garden center out in Cirencester, which is in the Cotswolds. I love going out there. The garden center has a little bit of everything, including: gifts, food, clothes, games, and of course plants. It's one of my favorite places to visit. Also, the drive to and from is beautiful. We'll sometimes take the scenic route home as we veer off the path a bit. As we were driving along, for a moment there was a lull in oncoming cars so I snapped this quick photo. It was a damp day and you can see a little bit of a smudge on the left side of the windshield. It can get kind of muddy driving out in the countryside sometimes, so this is just a reminder of nature licking the windshield ;-)

There's lots of beautiful countryside out there, so it's always a treat to take a moment to appreciate it.

I hope that your weekend was great too!

Blue Plates and Memories

Hello again :-)

In my previous post, I blogged about my love of blue. If you'd like to take a look, it can be found here. In my post I talked about how I'm seemingly drawn to things that are blue and often it's not a conscious thing.

Last night I couldn't sleep, so I occupied myself with the thoughts running through my mind. All of a sudden I thought of something that I left out of my blue post. That's the beauty of blogging though...a new day is an opportunity to write a new post ;-)

Here's my other favorite blue thing that I forgot...my pretty blue plates. When I bought them a while back, the label on the back called them Chateau Blue. They're sort of Wedgwood-esque....very sort of, but I like them. Maybe one day I'll have the real thing, but if not these will definitely do :-)

I love that the plates have a vintage look to them and they cost very little. I got them at an outlet store. You know I love a bargain!

These plates remind me of back home. Even though these plates don't look exactly like the dishes that I remember from my growing up years, they take me back to that time anyway. They remind me of my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins all sitting around having Sunday dinner. They remind me of this post that I wrote a few years ago now, about going back home and finding some vintage glasses. You can read that post here.

With Easter coming up this weekend I'm very reminded of those Sunday dinners, especially the ones on Easter Sunday. Everyone got together and we were all dressed nicely for lunch/dinner after church. After we'd finished eating, we'd go outside and sit on the big front porch and enjoy the warm breeze as the conversation went back and forth. I was little, so I didn't say much. I would just sit and listen to the grown-ups talk. It was comforting and lovely. The dogwoods and spirea would be in full bloom in the yard and often I'd go out and make a tiny bouquet to bring back to my mom or my aunts. Or sometimes I'd just sit on the steps and make little flower wreaths totally lost in my own thoughts with the grown-ups talking in the background. It was comforting to have that tradition in my life as a child. Those memories are what ground a great part of my identity to this day :-)

So these plates give me two special feelings. They give me my lovely dose of blue...my favorite color and they also open up the memory place in my mind. Not bad for some simple little blue plates.

However you're spending this Easter weekend, I hope that it's wonderful :-)

*My usual Friday Photo post will be back next Friday.

Happy Easter

I just wanted to post a short Easter greeting to all of you who celebrate :-) I love the renewal of spring and recalling my memories of Easter when I was growing up. When I was growing up, we had Easter speeches that we did in church, which were short pieces of poetry that we performed in a special program on the day.

Those memories stay with me all of these years later because it was a time of simplicity and community. I'm glad to have had that experience in my life. Also, I love poetry, so getting to speak it in public was so fun for me, even though I was a shy child. But I simply came alive while I recited the words, because it was doing something that I loved :-)

So I hope that you all enjoy this day, whether you celebrate Easter or not. Have a glorious Sunday! :-)

Easter Meatloaf

Brit Boy and I had a nice Easter. We relaxed around home and enjoyed the mild weather later in the day. We had breakfast and then turned on the TV to watch Pope Benedict XVI deliver his “Urbi et Orbi” message at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. I did some research and found out that this phrase is Latin for “to the city and the world”. How fitting. (smile) It was a nice way to start the day. I’m not Catholic and neither is Brit Boy, but I always like watching this message…it’s like no matter who you are, if you care to listen, it’s accessible. I always feel connected to the world when I watch this, since all those people from around the world are there. I think it would be a great experience to go there one day and experience it live and soak up the atmosphere. We shall see. (smile) After watching the Pope’s message, we started to work on dinner for later. As I mentioned the other day, I said I was going to share a meatloaf story. Brit Boy and I decided to have meatloaf for Easter lunch/dinner instead of a ham or lamb which is kind of customary. I made an extra nice meatloaf so it held its own for a holiday meal. Sometimes when we’re watching television and someone mentions having meatloaf, Brit Boy will mention that he’s never tasted it. He says he remembers watching a lot of American shows when he was growing up and they would often be having meatloaf, so he was intrigued. So I decided that I’d make meatloaf and give him his first taste. When I decided to make a meatloaf I instantly thought of one of my favorite movies of all time, “A Christmas Story”. Some of you may remember it. The lead character is Ralphie and he has a little brother named Randy who hates to eat dinner and plays with his food a lot. So one night, they are having meatloaf for dinner and Randy won’t eat and he says, “Meat-losse, meatloaf, double beatloaf, I hate meatloaf!!!” Check out this clip. I love that movie and being the cuckoo that I am sometimes, I will say stuff like this out of the blue and Brit Boy will laugh. What can I say, we find a lot of stuff funny around here. (smile) So the meatloaf turned out really good and we had mashed potatoes with a bit of cream cheese and garlic mixed in and some broccoli on the side. It was really tasty. meatloaf mash potatoes broccoli For dessert we had blackberry pie. This is my favorite kind of pie. It turned out okay. I’m gonna have to play around with the recipe a bit to get it just right though. We ate it anyway and it rounded things off nicely. So it was a happy Easter around here and we still have Easter eggs to eat…oh joy! (smile)

Great Documentary

I forgot to mention in my Easter Monday entry that Brit Boy and I watched this intriguing documentary on that afternoon. There was a documentary that was shown on The History Channel called “Life After People”. It was fabulous. The program was about a look into the future of the planet after all the people are gone. It analyzed what the planet would look like and be like a year, five years, twenty years, and further so on, after there were no people left on the planet due to the humans dying out in one way or another. It examined how the landscape would change with no one here to maintain it and how animals would adapt. It also looked at how long different man-made structures would last over thousands of years. I thought it was very interesting that some of the oldest structures such as the pyramids and other stone structures from long times past would survive way longer than our more recent structures. It says something about quality I guess. And it is interesting that they say that our modern recordings of history may not outlast ancient recordings of history such as the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt. The show was based on the speculations of what might happen, but it was still intriguing viewing.

The documentary has me still thinking after a couple of days and has given me some personal perspective on things. It made me see that a lot of the day to day annoyances that I endure will not matter as time passes and they will pass on into my personal history and that will be that. I also was reminded of how fleeting life is. And that man’s time on Earth in comparison to the life of the planet, is tiny. So I just want to enjoy my life and at the end to know how amazing it is to have lived.
