Late January Walk

Hello

It's been a while since I've posted. I was last here on January 1st and now here we are, with only two more days left in January after today. One month of 2022 will be in the books already. I say it all too often probably, but indeed, time flies!

Anyway, I thought that I'd share a photo that I took this morning during my morning walk. I'm trying to be consistent with my walking, at least on the weekends. I find it to be refreshing in so many ways.

I hope that you have a lovely weekend wherever you are.

Happy weekend 🌿

Lesson Learned

Hi :)

I just wanted to let you know that I'm still here. It's been several days since my last post. I'm still very excited to get back to blogging, however, I haven't been feeling so good again. All will be well though. I feel pretty good today, but I think that I've been pushing myself to feel 100% better before it actually happens organically. So I'm having to learn to pace myself a lot better. It's all about balance.

This is actually a good lesson for me. My body is teaching me that sometimes you just need to slow down and catch your breath literally and figuratively and be in the moment :) This has been shown to me time and time again before, but THIS TIME I got it. Older and wiser maybe...hmm ;-)

Anyway, like I said, I'm doing fine today and will be posting again in a couple of days. Don't worry though. I'm not rushing myself...I've learned my lesson :)

Have a great day wherever you are!

Hanging With Big Foot

It’s been a week since I posted, so I thought that today would be a good day to get back in the blogging swim of things :-) As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve not been at my best physically, so I’ve been preoccupied with all of that. But I’m optimistic that things are going to turn out fine. In the meantime I’m just not going to worry about it. I’ll keep you posted though. Thanks so much for the get well wishes. As of this very moment though…I’m fine and dandy ;-)

So anyway, two posts ago I shared a picture of a big foot and said that I would let you know where I found such a big foot. Well, here’s the rather impressive big foot…

I would love to have that in our backyard. LOL. I’d probably paint its toenails and plant flowers around it ;-)

This rather impressive foot is actually part of a…FOOTPATH. Clever huh? Yep, it’s part of a footpath at Westonbirt Arboretum. Brit Boy and I have visited many times and it’s one of my favorite places. Check out this link to read about another one of our visits there. I love Westonbirt because it’s beautifully simple…it’s just you and nature and I love that!

Here’s the rest of the footpath. They’ve laid out parts of stumps and scattered them through the woods. Isn’t that a neat idea? :-)

Of course I had to skip across a couple of them. What I really wanted to do was don some fairy wings and skip along the whole path ;-) Just a peek into my fantasy-filled thoughts. Lol. It was a beautiful day out. Brit Boy and I really enjoyed seeing all of the fall colors.

I took some photos of the leaves, but I feel like it might be too late to share them since we’re getting on towards winter now. Because of recent circumstances I got a bit behind. But if you all want to see some of them, please leave me a comment and let me know and I’ll gladly honor your requests :-)

Well, I’ll leave it there for now. I’m going to be posting more frequently again now that I’ve gotten over some hurdles, so I hope that you’ll visit me again. And I’m going to be doing some visiting too.

Have a great weekend and I’ll talk to you later…

Relief and Pancake Day

Yesterday was an eventful day. Brit Boy and I had to go to the hospital early in the day for my appointment. We left home early so that we could get there on time, but of course, we met quite a bit of traffic. It was wild. I didn’t know that many people lived out our way. LOL. Brit Boy thought it was more busy than usual too. Anyway, we took a detour here and a detour there and we finally made it to the hospital with a few minutes to spare.

I had to go back to have a check up again because I’ve been having some problems with a bit of pain in my breast. They wanted to have another look at me since the last time I went.

They checked me out again and the good news is, I’m fine. I don’t have “the disease we all worry about”. I have a bit of lumpiness, which they say happens a lot, so I’ll just have to keep watch over it. And to tell you the truth, I was relieved, but the whole thing hadn’t been taking over all my thoughts. I guess that is where faith comes in…you believe that things are going to be okay and if they’re not, then you rely on faith to get through whatever is ahead. You know, I wish that my mom could hear me say that, she would be amazed. (smile) She used to advise me to not worry so much, but I think that this was something that I’ve had to grow into. But I will say, I’m not some robot who had no thoughts of what could happen. Of course I had that thought, and it scared me for a minute, but then I just said, okay, let’s just see what they say. I don’t mean to come across like I’m oversimplifying it, but I was just simply glad that I’m okay (smile) What a blessing.

To change gears…after we left the hospital, I went along for the ride with Brit Boy while he saw a client. Then we came home and celebrated Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day here. We had pancakes for a sort of early dinner. Hey, we both love pancakes and we don’t have them very often, so they were great. Brit Boy eats them the British way with a bit of lemon juice and sugar, while I eat them with maple syrup. Delicious! (smile) We were happy campers.

In different places around the country, people have pancake races, where they run along with a frying pan which has a pancake in it and they try to run and flip the pancake as they run along. Brit Boy and I didn’t have our own little pancake race, but maybe next year ;-)

Anyway, it was a nice light-hearted way to end the day. Long live Pancake Day!

I'm Vertical Again

Hi there :-) Well, I took my much needed rest since I posted here last and many days before that when I was AWOL from here, and now I’m doing better. Brit Boy is fine too. Thank you to all of you who came by here to offer your get well wishes…Brit Boy and I really appreciate it. We are getting back into life after what seems like an eternity lying horizontal :-) In all, we were sick for about eight days, give or take a day. We don’t know who had the cooties first since we started to feel sick the same day :-) I haven't said "cooties" in years. LOL. It was yucky though…ugh. We’re just glad we are feeling better. We took the time we needed to rest and even though we were nauseous most of the time, it was just nice to slow down anyway :-) While we were stuck horizontal we talked about how we humans don’t realize we are rushing so much through life until we are forced to slow down. What a lesson that is :-) Anyway, enough sick talk.

I’m playing catch up here a bit today. Ah, let’s see…oh, our Valentine’s Day was good. We were sick and there were no flowers or candy this year, but it was just nice to have our romantic sick-fest together…hey, we’re easily amused ;-) We both said that there’s nobody we’d rather be sick with…now that’s true love :-) I know, enough already, right? Anyway, we watched movies and had a good day.

While I was lying around, I did finish one of my books that I’ve been reading. It was The Legs Are The Last To Go by Diahann Carroll. It was really a good read. I love biographies and autobiographies, so this was right up my alley. I always like to read how others, especially my elders, have persevered in their lives despite it being an uphill battle. Ms. Carroll has indeed led a wonderful life. Her accounts of her days in Hollywood, on Broadway and in the music world are truly intriguing. The list of people that she has known and/or worked with reads like a who’s who of the 20th century. I have always thought that she was one of the truly elegant ladies of our time and through the photos you see that she has truly been a beauty from the early days of her career over fifty years ago. There are also tales she tells of tough times, which ring true, because what life goes unscathed.

Besides her obvious beauty and elegance, you also get to see a woman who was intent upon showing her talent and fighting for equality. Ms. Carroll was a trailblazer along with others like Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, and so many more who paved the way in popular culture and in many other ways. I honor them all. They make me stand taller as a woman when I think of what they have gone through before me. They, like my own ancestors, light my path everyday. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I believe it will stay with me for a long while. What a gift :-)

My Friend Kim

As you all know, we have just come out of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I did a couple of posts highlighting this very important cause. Well I am like many of you now. I have lost someone who was so dear to me, to this horrible beast of a disease. It has taken me several days to come here and write about this, because I just didn’t know what to say. It was like I was in a state of shock, but it was a shock that I knew was a possibility, and yet I didn’t want to entertain the thought of it all turning out this way. I didn’t feel like I knew how to honor my friend and do her justice with my words. Then I decided that her advice to me would be, “Girl, just say what you feel” :-) So I will just say it simply…I’m gonna miss her so much.

My friend’s name was Kim. We were former co-workers who shared some great laughs and camaraderie in the office. We both worked for a corporation in downtown Atlanta. We worked in the Sales Department and she was one of the managers in the department. From the beginning she was always cool. On my first day, I was introduced to her and she said, “Welcome” and then we both laughed because we saw a resemblance. We both have sort of heart shaped faces and we just looked like we could be relatives. She looked sort of like one of my cousins does. So from that day on, she would walk past my cubicle and say something or she would stop and talk.

My best memories of her are her coming in in the mornings and saying, “Ohhh, I need my ‘cawfeee’ (coffee)”. Kim had the most wonderful New York accent and to my Southern ears, in its difference, it was music to my ears :-) I love to do impressions, so one day I parroted her morning line to her as she walked by my desk before she could say it and we both laughed. I created a monster though…after that she wanted me to do it all the time :-) She added one time though that I didn’t have enough of a Southern accent for her to mimic, so when we were kidding around, I would thicken my accent up for her pleasure :)

Kim’s other favorite thing besides coffee was chocolate. So around that 3pm slump that we all get, she would come by my desk and ask if I had any chocolate. Sometimes I did and I would load her up with whatever I had. At Halloween and Christmas, I would go by her office and we would trade off candy. It was great :-) But we would remedy any chocolate droughts by going to hit up the vending machines in one of the break rooms. As time progressed she started to collect spare change in a metal tin on her desk, and at nearly 3pm on the dot, she would come along rattling the tin. I’d hear her before I even saw her and then this voice would say, “Let’s go get some chocolate.” I’d take along my own money, but she would often just say, “Hey, I’m buying.” She was just a cool lady, like a big sister. She was great, not because she bought me candy…she was just a friend to me and I so appreciated her.

Kim was one of the higher-ups, but she never played that game with me. She respected me and I respected her. Even though we were in different groups within the department, she would call me into her office to brainstorm with her. Whenever she was writing something up she would always call me to her office with the enticement of chocolate :-) She didn’t need to entice me though because it felt good knowing that she trusted my judgment and skills. It felt good to be valued. And here’s the thing that shows what kind of woman Kim was, she would tell other higher-ups that I had helped her or let her boss know. I think the true strength of character is shown when people know that their strength comes from not only doing well themselves, but also from not feeling threatened by sharing the light with another and knowing that there is power in standing together. That was Kim. She even encouraged me to write for the newsletter for a time. She was always a cheerleader :-)

On many Friday afternoons, nearing the end of my time there, we would sit in her office and talk about what the future held. I was engaged to Brit Boy and was preparing to leave soon. She would say, “Lemme see that picture of you and that cute fella of yours.” I would go and get it and she would say, “Look at that, you all got matching dimples.” Then she would say, “Be happy girl…you deserve it.”

Kim said that she had dreams for the future too. She always wanted to do something to help girls to be strong in this world. She had wanted to do something that would help girls and others through mentoring and other services. She said that when she retired she would love to get a grant to set something up. Then she added, “I’m gonna look you up whether you’re in England or not. I need you to brainstorm with me and write up me a grant proposal.” I would laugh and say, “Kim, you need a grant writer for that, somebody who knows their stuff.” And she’d say, “I trust you to work it out.” I choke up when I remember that. Kim was what we all need in this world…someone who believes in us in spite of everything and will tell us so whenever we need it. So I told her that I’d be there for her when she called, and I fully meant that, no matter how out of my depth I felt :-) She had been there for me countless times and I was gonna be there for her whenever that call came.

I left that December, nearly three years back now and she left there that January. She got another job in North Carolina that was too good of an opportunity to pass up. We both went off into the next chapter of our lives. I always had it in my mind that we would see each other again. I figured that one day I was gonna drive on up to North Carolina, drop in on her and say, “Kim, where’s the chocolate and ‘cawfeee’?"

Then about a year later, I found out that she had breast cancer and even though I know it is a terrible diagnosis, we always have to have hope, you know. So I sent her a card and letter to let her know that I was in her corner and gave her an additional email address to contact me and I prayed.

Well, as the last few days of October ticked away, Kim passed away. She fought the good fight til the end. She was laid to rest yesterday. I wasn’t able to go back for the funeral, but in a quiet moment, I thought of her. And as the sun set and I looked out the window at the clouds, I waved her off and I was proud to have known her and to have called her my friend. People like her come into your life to teach you and I learned a lot about the kind of person that I want to be. I will value her friendship forever…a friend who believed in me.

Much Better Today

I just wanted to write a quick post to thank all of my readers/friends who left nice messages for me while I was sick. Y'all are great. :-) It certainly lifted my spirits to read what you had written. Thanks for your support and for coming back to check on me even though I haven't been feeling well enough to post.

I'm doing much better today. I'm not at 100%, but I am just so glad that the worst seems to be over with all of that. :-) Still, I'll be a good patient and finish all of my meds. ;-)

The sun is shining today, so that warms my heart and my bones.

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend everybody! :)

I'm Without My Voice Today

This will be a short post today. For the last couple of days I have been sick, so I haven't been able to do a lot of Entrecard dropping, but I did finally respond to comments on my previous post. So please accept my apologies, my fellow Entrecarders. I hope to return drops tomorrow. I was so pleased that many of you enjoyed my "7 Things" post and I wanted to respond back to show my appreciation. Here's a photo of our bed and I've posted it before, but I post it again because this is where I have been for a couple of days :-)

I have had this congestion and fever, coupled with a bad sore throat that has graduated to a bit of laryngitis. It was awful yesterday. I got some meds from the doctor and today I am feeling a bit better, so hopefully tomorrow I will be on my feet. Thanks for visiting me again. :-)

7 Things About Me

I have been tagged by my bloggy buddy Jewelry Rockstar to tell 7 things about me. This is my first tagging like this, so I’m excited. :-) Here it goes.

#1 – When I was in middle school, I was tapped into the Junior Beta Club. This is as, the name implies, the junior version of the National Beta Club. It’s an academic achievement society. I mentioned being "tapped in" when I was in middle school. Well in my school, they had us in an assembly and had us to put our heads down on the table and then they came around and tapped you if you were being taken into the club. Well, they didn’t really tell us what we were doing or perhaps I was talking to my friend at the time. So it was all a surprise to me. :-) And as a kid, who knows about these things? LOL. Anyway, I got tapped and for a moment I was kind of puzzled and thought that I was on the way to the principal’s office or something. LOL. I still remember my momentary panic. But I was cool on the outside though and followed the girl up to the front of the room. So I used to be a brainy kid…now, I’m just beautifully average. LOL. ;-) My pin and certificate are somewhere in storage.

#2 – I played the flute when I was a teenager and I won a few ribbons in competitions. I just took to it like a duck to water. However, I haven’t played in a long while now. I have to pick this up again. Might be fun. :-)

#3 – This week I have been getting back on track with my fitness. I worked out today and even though it is hard to start, I felt better after I finished. I am even cutting back on drinking the sodas. That is tough…eek! :-) I'm am such a soda fiend. I just had some green tea, so I am on my way to doing better.

#4 – I have been growing my hair out over the past year or so. I've been wearing my hair closely cropped for about ten years, so for a change of pace, I am now sporting longer, wavy curls.

#5 – I love watching TV shows and movies about ghosts and haunted places. I just don’t want to see a ghost though…I would probably break my neck trying to run away. LOL.

#6 – I am about nine months older than my husband, Brit Boy, so I love to call him, “My Younger Man” ;-)

#7 – I love to read and I love to write… I love my books. So one day I hope to walk into a store and see my book on the shelf.

There you have it. I scratched my head a lot, but I finally came up with seven. Now I’m going to pass this on and tag some others out there. They are:

Regina's Family Seasons
Health Nut Wannabee Mom
The Leaping Thought
Cutie Booty Cakes
Red Pine Mountain
Just Me
Confessions of a Fitness Diva

Tickled Pink

Yesterday, Brit Boy and I took a trip into town, and while we were there, I bought a very important shirt. I bought a Tickled Pink shirt just like I did last year. Here’s my shirt from this year. It has three quarter length sleeves and it was very comfortable when I tried it on. I’m so happy to have a new shirt to wear proudly.

And here is my Tickled Pink shirt from last year. It’s a comfy pink one and it used to have feathers adorning the drawn on feather on the front, but the feathers have fallen off over time. :-) It is probably my favorite t-shirt for two reasons…#1: It is really comfy and soft and #2: It is for a cause that is close to my heart and indeed to my breasts. :-) Please excuse the wrinkled appearance of both shirts. They were both headed to the washing machine.

October, as many of you know, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a woman, I am always doing my best to check myself regularly, but sometimes I slip up. Breast Cancer Awareness Month always brings me back to what I should be doing for myself and my health and also for Brit Boy’s sake too. I want to be around to hang out with him for a few more decades. :-) Life is so precious.

As I mentioned before, the Tickled Pink campaign is a great way to help to fund research into cancer treatment and there are many more places to find out about what is going on and also to lend a hand. Here are a few that I love:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Breast Cancer Care
Breast Cancer Campaign

So ladies, just a reminder from a friend, please remember to check yourselves and to take care. Please remind your mothers, sisters, and friends. And guys, please remind your wives and mothers and sisters that it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Also check yourselves because men can get this kind of cancer too. We all need to work together to take care of each other. :-)

Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins Recipe

Hello all. Here is the recipe for the muffins. I had to type this out last night after I posted yesterday, with the intention of sharing it. I have done these muffins so many times and I play around with the recipe so much that I had to search for the original recipe to share. :-) So here it is. I also sometimes don't put the blueberries in and then I put a bit of cinnamon and raisins in these to taste and they come out sort of like big oatmeal raisin cookies. As I said yesterday, I have found that a bit of peanut butter tastes good smeared on the blueberry ones. So I thought that I would try next time to add peanut butter to the recipe and see how that tastes. I got this recipe from a fellow blogger, Jenn, a while back. It is healthy-ish and not too sweet. So without any further commentary by me, here it is...enjoy! :-)

OATMEAL BLUEBERRY MUFFINS
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup soy milk (or regular milk)
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour (whole meal flour)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup butter or applesauce(for healthier option)
1 cup blueberries

- Preheat oven to 400F degrees.

- Combine oats and milk in small bowl; set aside and let stand.

- Combine flour, baking powder, soda, salt, brown sugar, and stir well. I sift all the dry ingredients to make the muffins fluffy.

- Add egg and melted butter or applesauce to oats.

- Rinse and pat dry the blueberries and toss into the dry ingredients and this prevents them from sinking in the muffins.

- Combine wet and dry ingredients and stir just until all is moistened.

- Gently fold in the blueberries and then spoon the mix into muffin pan until three-quarters full each.

- Bake for 17 to 20 minutes.

Nutritional info for 8 large muffins (using applesauce):
Calories 183, fat 2.1g, carbs 36.3g, protein 5.1g, fiber 3.4g

You can use large muffin pans, and you get 8 muffins because they are so big. You can use any size you like, obviously the nutritional content will change with size. Very tasty and healthy muffins, ENJOY!!!!!

Just one more note: This recipe is written with US measurements. Since I am in the UK, I had to convert the recipe. So for any UK readers, I have been measuring one US cup as 8 fluid ounces. Have a great day!! :-)

Baking Day

Yesterday I did some baking again, but Brit Boy wasn't in on it this time. So it was a solo bake. :-) I made some oatmeal blueberry muffins. They turned out really good. During the last year or so I have been steadily trying to get more healthy food into my diet...into both of our diets really. So this muffin is a great new favorite of Brit Boy and I. The blueberries are tasty and are a natural anti-oxidant, so it's a win win. Here's a photo of it before and after I dug into one of them. :-)

Herbal Treatment

Since I have finished taking my acupuncture treatments for the foreseeable future, I am now trying to finish off the herbal part of my treatment. While I was having the acupuncture, over the last year, I was also given some Chinese herbs to take. When I first started off with the treatments, I was taking a strong, bitter tea. Each time that I visited Karen’s shop, she would give me several bags of herbs that I had to brew for a while and then strain and then drink, twice a day. The herbs were in very organic form and were in a mixture of leaves and barks. But I was game because I had so much pain. I bought a cheap pot especially for the brewing because I figured that once I brewed the herbs, the smell would last in the pot forever. (smile) I was right. The smell was very, very strong and the taste was even stronger. But I persisted. This went on for a while and it really did help me.

Then I switched to the supplement form of the herbs, which worked out to be cheaper and did the same thing. And I have to say, as I have said before, I can’t say how acupuncture and/or herbs will work for everyone, but they did work for me. I think in the end, that the herbs and acupuncture worked well in conjunction with my physical therapy and now I am nearly 100% better.

I realized the other day that I still have some supplements that I have to finish, so I have started back taking them to finish off my treatment since these are the last ones I was given. I used to be a bad girl sometimes and skip them, so that is why I have some left over. (smile) Karen would be proud of me for following through.
